The Third Annual Whidbey Island Cribbage Tourney at Greenbank Farm on January 21, 2006 is now history. There were 48 participants playing in Main and Consolation Tournaments during the one-day event. Cash prizes were awarded to the top 16 finishers in the Main event and the top 10 in the Consolation tourney. The one-day format versus the two-days given to the previous two tournaments, seemed to please everyone - particularly when considering the important Seahawks game slated for Sunday, the 22 nd .

The Main Tournament was won by Deb O'Brien who also won the High Qualifier prize, a specially made tournament long board featuring text on the board face referencing her accomplishment. Deb took home $250 and another specially designed cribbage board for her first place finish in the Main Event. Second place and $175 went to Lee Bennett. Third and fourth place went to Al Swapp and Keith Becker respectively along with $80 to each of them. Rounding out those making the final bracket of 8 players and winning $40 each are Gene Rice, Chris Cardinal, Liz Krause and Dick Weber. Congrats to all the Main Event prize winners.

There were 20 entrants in the Consolation Tournament - including the tournament organizer, Bruce Howard . Mr. Howard will lay away nights lamenting his top score finish and refusal to accept the cash prize and custom cribbage board due the winner under normal circumstances. In his dreams, he will no doubt be asking ,, "Why can't this happen when I am in Reno playing in the largest cribbage tournament in the world?" Thus, it was Will Collins taking top honors and $120 in the Consolation Tourney. Second place and $80 went to Ed Vanderstoep and $40 was paid to third place finisher Jude Biegert , who along with many others, is a regular attendee at these cribbage events.

The tournament sponsor will again consider adding a summer tournament at Freeland Hall if there is enough interest expressed by local players. Such an event might be spiced up by having a special competition among selected South Whidbey non-profits such as the Eagles Club, the American Legion and the Holmes Harbor Rod and Gun Club. Members of these organizations who may read this recap and feel that such a special competition might create interest among members are asked to contact Bruce Howard at 331 7184 or at info@cribbageboard.com and pass along their ideas.
