Cribbage Tournament a hit.

June 10 th marked the first South Whidbey Cribbage Tournament at the Eagles Club just south of Freeland on Hwy 520. Thirty-four peggers played a 9 game main event trying to make the finals bracket where the top 4 finishers play head to head, best 2 of 3 games till a champion is crowned. The top eleven finishers won cash prizes. Tournament champion Gene Rice of Oak Harbor took home $225 and a custom cribbage board made especially for the event. Second place and $150 went to Eagles member Chuck Kollack. Will Collins and Ken Dougherty shared third and fourth place in the finals bracket with each taking home $75. Second through fourth place finishers also received a custom made gift box with a pewter "29" hand set in clear resin on the cover. Players 5 through 11 in order of finish were Al Swapp - $60, Adam Caveness - $45 and John Kjargaard, Deb O'Biren, Shirley Thrasher, Mike Clarke and Liz Krouse who each won $30. The comments from the players indicated that a 9 game, one day event with short finals bracket is the preferred format since the whole event takes less than 5 hours to complete. Other participants suggested that tournaments with the same format be held every quarter at the Eagles. If there is enough interest in having four tourneys a year on the south end, Cribbageboard.com would be happy to organize and sponsor them.
